I personally have a baby bosc, young Tegu and also a baby iggie, but I have a enough room for them all, if your thinking of something like a bosc or a Tegu then I would say they are both beautiful animals that do tame up pretty well but the Tegu (argentinian) tames better but they are more expensive to buy as mine cost me £160 a couple of days ago and hes only a few months old but they are beautiful, bosc's are cheaper to buy at about £46 each for hatchling, ethier animal when its fully grown would need a large long ways tank for them to run around in they will need 6 foot x 3 foot tank at the least.
Water dragons are beautiful lizards and tame up really well so I believe, a fully grown wd will need a high tank, at least 4 foot x 3 foot, you can pick up a wd baby for about £50 in my local rep shop, not sure how much they are every were else.
Certain Geckos are reallly good starter lizards if you are a newbie, they tame very well, aren't to hard to look after and don't grow big so don't need large vivs and they aren't too pricie.
I think you should get a blue tongued skink they are amazing, mine was £100 they don't grow really big, and they are so funny and easy to tame but its got to be what you want at the end of the day.

hope this helps.
