Default Herpetological Societies - Anyone A Member?

Just wondering if many people are members of IHS or other socities. Considering how active a forum like this is you'd of thought socities would of been alot more proactive.

So are many people members of socities, and if not why not?

Hi Zak,

We have run similiar threads and polls like this before and at times upset the societies themselves.

There are members on this forum to as Chris has stated, IHS, BHS, FBH, and a few others to boot.

Societies have lost a lot of their lustre, many keepers do not believe in them anymore, whilst others have no wish to join societies at all.

It is sad really, tbh.

The reason i ask if because we got chatting about it in the local reptile shop the other week, how there was a lack of one etc and the possibility of setting one up.

Im just getting an idea if people actually care about them. I gather that alot of lustre has gone from them as of late but if there was an active and emerging one would anyone care?

Well that is the biggie in questions isn't it?

Does anyone care?

I do not think it is about whether people care or not Zak, l think it comes down to this simple thing:

What will they do for me if l do join them?

Many societies need to place a charge on membership to those looking to join.

Keepers of today, want something if they join.

These links may assist you:

High Society

What are the benefits...?

the difference between a Federation and Societys? in your opinion ?

I do wonder if perhaps the term society is perhaps too strong, maybe, you need to be looking at starting a 'club' local to your area?

I have been looking at joining BHS or FBH. I think its a good way to keep in touch with whats going on, hopefully someone nice will pay my membership for my birthday

I have too notcied that for the amount of people using forums like these that there arn't many that appear to be members of societies, but I guess thats not to say that many arn't

A club perhaps is a better term but then is there the connotations of 3 guys sat in a pub talking about their snakes. I see it much bigger than that, if only half of the people in the local area interested in herps came to one meeting theres no reason it couldn't be huge.

I agree that people definitely want something for joining, they need to feel justified in spending their money. They dont just want to be a member of something they want an experience or something physical they can use etc.

Thanks for the related threads, will give them a read.
