I was considering picking up some strobes, backgrounds and whatnot but the costs soon start to mount up - It's still something I would like to have a go at but probably not for a while.

I was looking at the following;
Elinchrom D-Lite 4 Kit (20802) - Warehouse Express
Sekonic L-758D Digitalmaster (651112) - Warehouse Express
or
Sekonic L-358 Flash Master (650067) - Warehouse Express

Plus a background and stand.

What setup are you using for portraits Angi?

Standard house lamps, daylight through the window, various painted walls or cardboard for backing, lol. I do have a flashgun, but its playing up at the moment. I wanted to try and take a few decent ones before investing in any expensive equipment

Do you have off-camera flash?

That's another option I've been considering, getting the flash off the camera to use an additional strobe - Or the main strobe - I was thinking of a sync cord or remote trigger, a cheap stand and softbox, at least it will be keeping the cost down.

You should be able to get good portraits from a side window light, you just need a reflector of some sort to bounce the natural light back - Perhaps a Lastolite TriGrip or a simple piece of white card should do the trick.

I use the Gary Fong Lightsphere, which is OK. However, I think it would be worth investing in a stand and softbox to use with your existing flash if you're going to do portraits.

Something like this to adapt your existing flash;

I like taking portrait pics, but I don't do anything special lol.. just use my camera and a blank wall behind most of the time.
I prefer unstaged looking shots too where they aren't looking into the camera and shots where the full face isn't in shot, just half of it or something.. Hard to describe and probably sounds very amateur-ish but I like them
