Personally I'm a Canon man and I know this is twice your budget, but the following may be something to think about;

looking for a camera but what one?

the fuji s5700 is a great bridge camera but if you can find one get the s5600 and fuji stripped some of the features out for the s5700 like raw and a heap of fstops as well and longer than 4 second exposures

I recently (yesterday) got my first dslr 400d. Think it'll be a steep learning curve but I'm looking forward to it.

I still like my compact camera, and camera phone for ease of travel and quick use. But I can't wait to take the shots that i really want.

throw and camera phone and the compact in the bin.you have an slr now..nothing comes close..its ok using a compact if its a shit hot one..if its a 100£ jobby i woulnt bother using it. thats me tho..i like the control of an slr..i control the camera instead of the compact controlling you..auto focus sucks on them things..thats the main reason i got an slr...manual focusing.
