have u got 2x gary fong diffusers on your flash heads?your using mt-24ex right?
Am using MR14-EX not the two heads - shooting with ringflash. They are diffused - but only as they come, nothing added. Not sure how easy that would be.

Will add that tip into the mix next time I'm out. I usually underexpose by about a stop outside of the macro field and bring back the light in RAW as you said. I have been finding that doing it in the macro range increases the noise if you go too far.

Are you also reducing the flash settings in manual or working ETTL?

yer your right..thats whats called "colour noise" caused by not enough light hitting the background...alot of people including me use noisewhere professional before sharpening and changing levels..i use it even when im at iso100...take look at this macrojunkie's deviantART Journal

i change fec on the flash if i want to change exposure..im nornally at either -1/2 -2/3 or 0..somtimes im using +1/3 fec.
