I'm an amateur too and the best thing I ever did was buy and read the book "Understanding Exposure", then move onto using my cameras in manual mode. Does your camera have a manual option? You may not need to buy a new camera just yet, maybe just learn how to get the best out of your current one whilst saving up for the best you can get.
Also try joining a photography forum for advice and tips, many also have tutorials. I'm not going to recommend a camera as I've only used a couple of Cannons and a few Fuji finepix's over the years so dont feel I could give you an objective idea. |

Thanks Angi....great advice!
![]() The camera I have is the Samsung digimax 420 which is a good camera considering I have now had it about 6 years or more. And you are completely right, I don't use is manually even though there is the option to...I hang my head in utter shame as I didn't realise there was a macro option for close up shots ![]() I lost the manual shortly after having it so I've just downloaded a pdf version of it so hopefully I can get to learn the camera properly. Any good forums or beginners websites you can recommend?

Fab, it actually sounds like a decent camera to me. That book is worth its weight in gold if you ask me. Also your manual will help you a fair bit too.
I use Talk Photography™ and Canon Digital Photography Forums - Powered by vBulletin and Digital Camera Reviews and Digital Photography Techniques There must be tonnes of others too, but I have found all of the above useful. I'm sure Scott ( macrojunkie) will be able to suggest a few places for you to get tips etc too. I look forward to seing your pics, its good to have more people taking an interest in photography on here, we can all learn from each other. |
