Im using an On/Off for a heatmat and i think they work fine for heatmats. If you was to use one with a light though then that would be different - i tried it.
The light don't stay on for long, it will warm the tank and then turn of as soon as it hits the set temprature. The dimming thermostats are better because they dim as they approach the set temprature. By the time the temp hits the limit temp the light will be dim and produce a steady heat. By the end of the weekend i will be using an on/off for the mat and a dimmer for the light. Im rebuilding a new wooden viv for the kids (ha ha, i had to say kids then) On/Off are poor for lights personally. I think they can also damage them but dont quote me on it.

Thanks for the replies.
It's an old have an old Habistat Temperature Thermostat I have knocking about, so that should cope with a 100w ceramic hopefully. I'm not too bothered by a bit of temp fluctuation. Great stuff, thanks again.
