Default Well its a habitat...

... just not for a reptile.

Anybody had experience building a kennel?

I'm going to build a 7x3x3 twin kennel for the dogs, one 4x3x3 (for the NI) and one 3x3x3 (for the staffy cross).
When i'm doing it i want to keep the costs down so i'm using 6x2 for the frame (left over from doing a mates decking) and cover the sides in hardboard and then decking planks as i reckon it'll work out cheaper using them than it will to use plywood.

It'll be raised 6inches off the ground to ensure it won't get damp.
each one will have their own section with a partition wall to give a dry area away from the opening

Also thinking about possibly putting windows or a sky lark in each side so i can see if they've crapped and it needs cleaning out. Would that be a good idea or would it cause heating problems on warm days?

any building advice would be delicious.

Cant exactly say i have any building advice as you seem to have your head screwed on and have a good idea of what your going to do.

But i built a kennel for my staffy and weimaraner...it has two levels with a sort of slope stair case. one third of the roof is glass as the staffy loves looking out of window.

Dimensions are something like 8'long, 6' wide and 7' high.

Will get pics of it tomorrow when it is light if you want.

yeah please mate.. i'm pretty limited to space and a 7x3x3 will pretty much take up space thats already being used and can be freed up.

would like to do something as big as yours but if i do they won't have as much garden to play with and i don't have that much free wood.. lol

Good luck Meko with it, as Philcw said you seem to have a good idea what you are doing. As for the window, depending on the size i cant see it being a problem with over heating on hot days, go to a local glaziers they always have old windows in all sizes that they have taken out of jobs.

lol, well if ground space is an issue which is was slightly for me, make it a 2 story kennel for more space.
I have plenty of wood if you ever need any mate but the time and cost of you getting it would probably work out the same as going down to your local wickes lol.

The only thing about 2 floors is, that my staffy is a clumbsy thing and falls down the slope, is your staff cross generaly clumbsy?

he's just a clumsy shit never mind a clumsy climber. Sits on the end of the bed licking himself, leans back too far and falls off the bed.

Hi. I take it they will only be used for sleeping in?

Sounds like a good idea really. Will look good once finished.

Tony.

no its not for sleeping in.
The NI gets seperation anxiety when i'm not in which means i can't leave her in the house when i go to work as she craps everywhere. At the minute i've emptied the shed for them so they can have the garden when i go out but its quite flimsy.
The kennel will be for somewhere for them to go and relax or stay out of the rain when they need to while i'm not in. So its just a windproof and rain proof retreat for them.
