I have tried polystyrene for small projects but it just makes so much mess!
So i was wondering if anyone had used a dense foam - kinda like what they use in cushions and matresses? How did it tun out? I wouldn't be covering it cement or whatever, i'm thinking of dying it brown and soaking it if it ever gets dirty - its for a dry enclosure. Can anyone maybe think or a reason why not to use foam instead that i might have overlooked? Thanks

i think that would depend on how small your projects are,
because on bigger projects, i dont think foam would give the cement enough support, i would think polystyrene is easier to sculpture than foam (depending on your desired finish ), i know what you mean about the mess tho, the static built up whilst carving it makes it stick to everything! have a go tho, the foam you have might give you the finish you want. |

Try using extruded polystyrene foam rather than the blown beaded type, it's what professional sculptors use, it carves better and cleaner because it has no bead structure, and it's denser and stronger.
You can buy sheets of it from any good insulation suppliers. |
