what wattage bulb would be best to use to heat a 6x3x18" i was thinking of just getting the 250w? or would that be to overkill i would rather have a litter more than not enough but any opinions welcome

I would go for 250w and aslong as you have it on a thermostat, better to have more then allow the themrostat to stabalize it then not gaining the set temperture in total.

Spot On :]
You could even get away with a simple on/off thermostat, but that would be ideal :]

Best of luck.
