Default open vivarium

i have an old fishtank which is quite tall, at 2 foot. its spacious enough for a gecko at 2.5 feet but would i be able to leave the lid off of it to let more moisture from the air in.plus the dimensions are 81x38x55 cm so what size of heatmat is necessery.
