wooden viv suitable?

i`ve been bought a beautiful new wooden viv...it`s taken someone months to construct and it`s two seperate vivs on top of each other with glass doors on both and cupboard space underneath and he`s carved it and made it look stunning...but here`s my problem...he`s made it out of pine.
i know that pine can be toxic to snakes so i was wondering if there`s anything i can do to make this viv workable...i don`t want to seem ungrateful to him and i really want to use it because he spent 170 quid on it and it took months to build...if i`d known what he was planning i`d have made sure that he used different wood but it was a surprise.
i know that pine shavings contain toxic oils but if i coat this viv with deck varnish can it still be used?
it was built for my mexi black and albino nelsons if this helps.
any info would be appreciated and if it`s a big no no then i won`t be using it.

dont panic dear all u need to do is stain it boat varnish on the inside about three coats will do it and any water based stain on the outside u could use the water based stain on the inside but the boat varnish is much more durable and water proof make sure u get all the pine coverd and leave til the stains completly dry youll be fine how about some pics

thanks for the reply...i really wasn`t looking forward to telling him i couldn`t use it

i got some deck varnish in the hope that it would work so now i guess i`ve gotta get varnishing!!!
i don`t have a pic yet but i`ll take one later and post it.
