Default Mecury Vapour in Beardy Viv

As title says really, we are currently in the midst of building and kitting out a viv for a baby beardy (although he will be in a smaller viv initially).

However, I was wondering about these Mecury Vapour lamps, as I beleive you dont need a tube and a heat source as these are 2 in 1.. am I right?

Now please forgive me if im making very little sense here, as Im a corn snake lady and he or she will be my first lizard, However, I wanna make sure Im providing the best for him.

Has anyone got any experience with these or offer me any advise as far as they are concerned. Any posts much appreciated.

Many Thanks

Chell

Hi there, thanks for that really appreciate it.

The dims are 36" x 17" x 22". I know this is quite high for a beardy so we were planning on making some areas with platforms to make better use of space & to increase his floor space a bit.

My problem is I have read too many different care sheets stating ifferent things bout heat and light requirements.. Any advise would be much appreciated.

Cheers Michelle

I personally would avoid Mercury Vapors in a cage that size - the only stat they are compatible with is on / off ones, and 22" will probably put the bulb too close to your BD. As the cage is so small, it will be hard to stop it from overheating (even with the lowest wattage MVB) without the bulb turning on / off all the time. A regular household bulb from B&Q, along with a UV tube and reflector mounted on the backwall of the cage would be fine, and would be much safer as the bulb can be used in conjunction with a thermostat.

Are you planning to get him a larger cage when he's older? An adult needs a 4' x 2' or equivalent, to give them at least 8 sq. ft. of floor space...

i agree with hadesdragons this viv is a bit small for a MVB if you want to use a mvb 4x2x2 is the smallest i would go i do sell 60W externally balasted which produce very little heat but getting the bulb 12 inches may be an issue.

a user on the forum has success fully mounted one on the outside of a 48 x 18 x 18 and added extra ventilation by cutting a hole in the top of the viv the size of the lamp reflector and resting it on that i cant recomend this but i have seen it done

Question

Again, reading too many care sheets has led me wrong I think.. Would a 3 ft definately be too small for an adult.. ???

We havent done anything about getting one as yet (just been getting the bits together to convert a unit into a viv), but if we cant provide the right size home for him with what we have we would rather not have one, If you know what I mean. I know we havent really the space for a larger tank.

Honest opinions appreciated!

Many thanks

Michelle

3ft wouldn't 'definately' be too small. Many people have used a 3ft with no problems but you never know how big your beardie is going to grow. As they can grow to 2ft a 3ft viv won't give much space but if they stop at 18inches the length is still twice the dragons length in a 3ft viv.
