Default moss

just a few questions
ive just bought some fresh moss from my local diy shop , it smells like fresh grass a very earthy smell , is it ok to use in me vivs ?
do i have to clean it ? if so with what
ive put it in the microwave for 5 mins as it was damp , and my kitchen now smells like a reptile house you know the smell if you go to a zoo and walk in to the reptile house , how long does it last before i have to replace it (if i do use it) as i want to keep it damp for the humidity
cheers all

Depending on the brand and type of moss, it may be perfectly safe to use
