The answer really depends on how good you are at diy and the tools you have.

To build and fit out your own viv:

Contiboard - diy stores b&q (some have cutting), wickes, homebase etc
Glass - local glaziers
5ft runners - me
vents - me
assembly blocks & screws (if you dont want screw heads or caps to show)- me
screw caps (if you dont mind them showing) - me
ceramic lamp holder kit - me
1" tube clips for uv tube - me
handles for glass doors - me or glazier
30" or 36" uv tube - exoticsandtropics web site (30% off at the mo)
habistat controller for heat lamp
100w heat/spot lamp - b&q etc
sealant for inside viv edges
a few screws
conti edging strip - diy stores
thermometer

tools
drill and drill bits for pilot holes
hole cutter for vents - i have these
screwdriver

optional:
patience, swearing, pleasure, pride

deepending on what you are after i have just built a 5x2x2 viv and the costs are as follows.

MDF 18mm 1 sheet 8'x4' £15.99 B&Q
glass runners were 2.35 for bottom runner and 3.30 for top runner 8' lengths from the local hardware shop.
Glass was 6mm straight glass with polished edges £24.50 at a local glaziers.
Black backboard paint £12 B&Q and then ronseal floor varnish around £15 at B&Q.

This was all screwed together and the screw holes were then filled and painted and then varnished. The viv was silicone sealed at every joint as the viv was being built and then the whole thing was varnished with 3 coats.

I already had tubular heater,uv tube and starter unit and also had light fittings etc.I would say if you thought it out and draw up you viv then divide a sheet of timber or buy conti board and get it cut to sixe you could probably do the whole thing for the cost of the viv you are looking at but in your own build you would have all the electics in the price.
