Default Royal viv

Right, decided to use the 4'x15"x15" viv for my Royal and just build a new one for Beardies so I can use the ceramic heater without the worry over height etc.

Just not sure on the best way of heating it now for the Royal. He's currently in a RUB with a heatmat under it as many people do, but how to heat the viv?

I've seen people put the heatmats under the substrate and tape/gaffer it down. Others seem to stick 'em to the sides/back of the viv. Others just lights.

Which is best/safest? Don't want a fire hazard!

I would use heatmat inside of viv run from stat, for ours i cut some 3mm hardboard and screw down over and around heatmat (not through it) and put gaffer tape around sides to stop substrate (and other stuff0 getting in between.

For my Royal I've used a heatmat inside the viv with a table mat over the top and a Habistat radiator which is excellent at keeping the temps right.

What kinda tablemat you using? I've looked at some in the supermarkets and apart from gaudy nasty designs I don't think theyd be suitable. They're all crappy nylon stuff or cork (Which warp I think?) or leather (And my snake isn't into that kinda pervy stuff!)

Guys thought i might point out for those of you who are taping down hardboard over your mats please ensure that it is attached to a habistsat or something similar. DO NOT just plug this into the mains or there is a real risk of fire, also cut out a section of hardboard where the cable joins the mat..

As a firefighter i have been to many fires caused this way. providing it is attached to a thermostat there will be no chance of it getting hot enough..

Thanks

Tony
