Typically people use contiboard for vivs. The normal method is to screw 4 sheets together to make a carcase, then screw on a backboard, and a plinth at the front, and sliding doors. Very simple and it works but probably won't get you top marks
I think you may want to do something in 'real' wood, with proper joints? Be aware that if you want to use 'real' wood you will have to seal it inside in some way. People generally use varnish, but you may want to conside other materials like tiling (ceramic or vinyl), or fibreglass, or... How about doing dovetail joints on the carcase and make a rebate near the back of the viv to take a backboard? You'll need a plinth at the front (contains any substrate). What doors are you thinking of? Sliding glass or conventional doors? What size are you considering? Something like a 2ft cube?

What do you mean by a rebate? And I'm going to fit everything, so that includes the vent and the lighbulb and what not. I'm having sliding perspex/glass so I will need some runners. I'm thinking of doing a 3ft Long, 1ft Deep and around 2ft High. Thanks for the tips (:

Type of Timber Recommended to use:I would use Birch, Ash, or Oak wood.
Type of Joint Recommended to use: I would use either a Dove tail joint, Or rabbit joints Type of Finish to use (I.E: Varnish, Paint, etc): Light to medium burning of wood then Varnish it Type of Sealant to use: Ureathane finish, or a poly ureathane, in a glossy finish. type of timber: vaneered mdf, gives the look and feel of real wood as the outer faces are a thin layer of real wood. much cheaper than real wood and easier to work with.
type of joint: if you have access to a router you could do a biscuit joint. small slot cut in the 2 edges to be joined, insert the biscuit, glue then push the 2 pieces together, clamp. for the back, use router with straight cutter, cut a groove the same size as the back board about 10 mm in from back edge of the 4 sides then when putting the pieces together slot in the back board. sorry if this is a bit hard to follow. would be a good idea to run a bead of sealant around all the internal corners. maybe aquarium sealant. hope this helps. |
