It's normally the sap that you need to be careful of so I would advise looking for fallen branches that have already dried out rather than cutting one yourself and then trying to dry it.
If you do a google for 'safe wood for birds' there are loads of lists you can use for referance. |

Your best bet is to go out and pick up deadfall.Cutting the limbs off trees is illegal unless it is your own tree or you are there doing it in the way of work and have a permit to be doing so.If you do get fresh branches then you will need to be careful as to which tree they come from.
Oak and fruit trees are the best to use as the sap in the branches is not tocic to snakes but would still be better if they have been cut down for a while. Whatever you do DO NOT use branches from Pine trees as this is extremely tocix to snakes
