well, currently i have a tank with an entire glass top, i was either planning on getting some one to cut a hole in it to put a mesh in for air or yes, i suppose a wire mesh top would do as long as it was secure for my roaches.

You will struggle cutting a hole in a piece of glass without specialist equipment and if the glass is toughened then its impossible to cut it anywhere.
Your best bet would be to make a timber frame and use that to stretch some mesh over and staple it down or split your frame (or make it in two pieces) and clamp the mesh between the two then nail or screw together. I've seen loads of different mesh in garden centres and B&Q's. Try your local B&Q warehouse if you have one.

I tried B&Q for mesh to do the same thing, with no luck.
Let us know if you find some!

I was in our B&Q last week and they had loads of different types in. Nothing small enough for me to make a wire bulb guard, but stuff for a viv cover.
Why not try the stuff that you can put down under stones to stop weeds growing. Similar to this stuff: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Weed-Master-Ma...QQcmdZViewItem I can't really find a better picture of it, but its like a breathable membrane. Not exactly mesh but does the same job. Prob even better for keeping the humidity in. If you look in a garden centre or B&Q (most of them) its normally on big rolls somewhere where you cut your own length off.
