Default housing a turtle

hi im new to reptiles after having kept fish for 5 years i fancied something different. id like keep turtles, possibly 2, im thinking eastern painted or map turtles as these do not grow too large. what sort of size tank would a need to keep these in? i have a 25 gallon tank would this be adequate for 1 possibly 2 turtles? also any advice on a hardy turtle that does not grow too big? thanks in advance

Your best option would probably be 2 maps in a 4ft tank, they need quite a bit of space, you may get away with a 3ft for maps, you will need a heavy duty filter and be prepared to do plenty of water changes.

You might get away with a 25g for a while, but eventualy they will need around a 40gal minimum

If you are currently into aquatics and thinking of turtles, be careful or befoure long you will be geting rid of fish tanks to fit in vivs lol, I started out with fish, then got a couple of turtles, and now have about 40 reps

give them as much space as you can... i have 5 in a 225 gallon tank! remember females grow twice the size of males so they do need a lot of space

25 gallons is a very small tank in turt terms, you could keep one or two hatchlings in it for maybe a year at most before they outgrow it, it's a starter tank and you'd soon need something a lot bigger.

You're very unlikely to find any painteds as they haven't been imported into the UK for many years, you might be lucky to find an adult if you search hard enough but they are rare, once in a while a very few CB hatchlings appear but they are snapped up quickly!

If you want small turts then your options are limited, you could get a male Map but you'd have to get a juvenile or adult to be sure of the sex, females grow to around twice the size and you can't sex hatchlings.

Musks stay small whether male or female, with Common Musks being the smallest at just 4"-5" SCL, they are hardy little things and quite entertaining to watch, not exactly common regarding availability but they can be found fairly easily.

One or two of these might live a couple of years in your tank before needing an upgrade.

If you look at the top of the Shelled section there's a sticky explaining tank sizes.
