Some will say in for better effect but I'd say outside.
Glass doesnt let heat through too well so put a polystyrene sheet under the mat to direct heat upwards. You really need to cover 3 sides too or your corn may get stressed due to feeling exposed on all sides. Do a search for " heat mat where put" or something like that and you will get loads of opinions to read through. Or wait for a corn expert to pop in.

Sorry, also forgot to say that if you do put it inside you will need to cover it with a false floor to stop your snake getting directly on the mat.
Also try to check air temps and not just the floor to get a better all round ambient temperature. Is your mat on a stat and does it cover only a third of the viv / tank?

But if you do have to use the glass tank - two things:
Make sure there's a gap between the surface of the mat and the base of the tank - 5mm is about right. If there's no gap you risk the heat from the mat crakcing the glass in the base of the tank. Just raise the tank by placing something (layers of cardboard, pieces of wood, etc) under each end. And make sure you get a stat (if you don't already have one) and put the probe as close to the surface of the mat as possible - either in the viv on the floor over the area where the mat is, or taped directly to the mat's surface outside the viv, and always monitor the temp at floor level at the warm end to make sure it's not overheating - should be no higher than 88F over the mat. |
