Default Heating a 4 and 5 Foot

Hi, just was wondering what size ceramic heaters would be needed to heat a 4x2x2 and the same for a 5x2x2.
Also, how could I use one pulse proportional stat for both vivariums, or would I need two?

Thanks alot, Mike

Im building a 52x24x24 which is in between. I'd say probably a 250w. And if you want to control both at the same time try and twin thermostat. You can get one on ebay for about 40 quid.

Thanks for the reply. The exo terra wire light holders dont have a bottom to them, do you think that it would need to be covered (for a guyana red tail)?

Thanks, Mike

Even if you think there's no chance your snake could get up to it, a CHE should always be screened. A mesh cage is cheap, and the element gets extremely hot. Brush against it with your hand accidentally, and you'll come away with burns. I don't want to imagine the damage a snake reaching up, and flicking the tip of its tongue at it would do.

No matter what with ANY animal with ceramic heaters you should always use bulb guards. But make sure if it is a snake that they cannot fit through the holes.

Maybe ill just get a wire cage, like this one, but this one isnt big enough for the 250w models you surrgested: Ceramic Heater Guard

It does however say that they can get ones made to differant sizes, so I might ask about that...

Thanks, Mike

I've used a 100w in a 3x2x2 and it easily gave a warm area of 90F so IMO 250w might be a bit much - 150w for both maybe?

One thing about the twin stats - they just the basic on/off type so not ideal for ceramics. They can be used with ceramics in some setups, but pulse stats would be a lot better.

As the vivs are different sizes I go for two separate stats to be on the safe side, especially if the vivs are going to be stacked.

Cheap pulse stat:

Allright then. Does anyone else think that a 250w would be too much for a 4x2x2 and for a 5x2x2, and if so do you think the 150w would be ok?
Thanks Mark.

I use a 250W in a 6x2x2 viv, which keeps the cool end at 80, stat set to 85 placed half way down the enclosure, basking spot low 90's. On cold days it can struggle (pulse will show it's on 90% of the time or more).

So I'd still go with the 250W. Worst that'll happen is the stat will pulse it for less amount of time than it would do that 150W - your final temperatures will be the same, it'll just use less of the capacity of the bulb. And if you have a really cold day, it'll respond better than a 150W would.

And aren't 150W and 250W CHE's the same size, and cost the same?

Yeah I think they do, just the fittings etc are more for a 250w, but its not a big deal...
Do you think a 4x2x2 would need a 250w?

Cheers, Mike
