Default Can't get wood.

I've been looking around various garden centres/tropical fish places for branches and logs for my vivs, but they charge the earth for them. Seriously, I just can't see how they justify asking £50 for a lump of wood!

What I'm wondering is... is there a list somewhere of species of tree that are toxic to snakes? I know branches etc should be stripped of bark and then baked for a while to get rid of any parasites, but what species of tree is best to use?

Thanks for any help.

Generally speaking, with snakes it's not too important as long as it's bark-stripped HARDWOOD - not pine/cedar/fir etc. The softwood trees tend to have phenols, which are dangerous to delicate lungs.

Fruit trees, most nut trees, and particularly willow, birch and beech, should be safe. A snake's not likely to try to chew on the branches, you see.

Thanks very much for the info... I'll head to my local park when I'm next off work and get scavenging!

Thanks again.

You can get branches from your local wood but tbh its best to do it in summer as the wood is much much drier!

You will also have to clean it correctly

1) soak it for 12-24hrs in a weak bleach solution.
2) soak again for 12-24hrs to wash bleach off. Make sure its all off, scrub it with some boiling water as well.

Some people bake it in ovens for a bit etc guess that depends if it will fit. I clogged up my bath for 48 hrs with wood last year, have to do it again as well this year

I got a HUGE java branch with screw and wingnut attached for easy mounting from Cadbury Garden centre in Bristol. They have LOADS of wood and none of it is more than £25. Give it a go if you can get there.
