Default Cheap/Recommended Glass?

Looking for some glass that is preferably cheap as we're thinking of making a viv stack or two! Any mail order companies out there who are good?

Dont know about glass but I was looking through ebay and found some clear acrylic sheets that I believe are used as an alternative to glass. Im considering building my own viv and may use this as it comes in the same thicknesses as glass and is supposedly tougher. The link to the ebay sale I found is below. I contacted the seller and they said you can either cut yourself using a fine blade on a jig saw or ordinary saw but they can also supply ready cut to size. Cheaper than glass maybe.

you need to be careful with acrylic sheets because the lights sometimes warp it and the lizards claws can make quite bad scratches.

Just a thought... it might be worth checking with the guy that the acrylic doesn't bend at all. If it does have some flex in it and you are using it with runners, it'd be easy for the snake to pop it out.

yeh, thats why i refused to use 4mm thick acrylic (which is the thickest i can get locally) was a LITTLE bit too flexible, if i had managed to source 6mm thick stuff it might have been alright..
I'd say just stick to toughened glass, actually worked out cheaper than acrylic round here anyway and it will last a lot longer (dosnt scratch so easily)
Owen

Should add.. the reason they say acrylic is tougher is that it is VERY hard to break a sheet of 4mm thick acrylic by throwing stuff at it, it has more stretch than glass so absorbs impact (by flexing and stretching) rather than break like glass does...

Acrylic isn't a good choice, you will scrath it even if your snakes don't have claws! Also it bends and is easier to escape from/ Also its more expensive than glass i find!

If you want cheap glass try your local glaziers for quotes but also a tip I picked up it your local window companies. They have loads of glass from windows they have taken out and taken away. They basicaly sell it all off rather than throw it out as its pure profit! Generally its the 6mm stuff as well

Go to a local glaziers.

I work for a company who supplies glass and windows all over the UK. We only deal in big orders, but if you PM me your location I can give you details of a good company near you and as a fellow reptile keeper I'll arrange the lgass at a nice price for you.

I will get you a price (cheap price) for glass and if you want it then I'll get it delivered to your local window company where you would have to collect it from.

As a guide these are good prices:

Single sheets:

4mm non-tough £9 / sqm
4mm tough £15 / sqm

6mm non-tough £15/sqm
6mm tough £24/sqm

6.4mm laminated £25 /sqm

Prices can move about but generally pretty accurate.

There is no profit there for me which is why I won't keep selling it like this, but don't mind doing my good reptile deed for the year.
