Depends on whether they are slate, Imitaton slate or the wavy concrete tiles. Apart from the genuine slate I don't know what the other two would have been mixed with, or what could have seeped into them over time.

I am however not an expert on such things, and I am standing ready to be chastised and corrected

they are just your plain everyday slate roof tiles. they would be a little old, dont show much signs of damage, and i should think a good clean would get most stuff out??

I would think that slate ones are probably the safest, as I believe, don't quote me, that slate doesn't absorb, so I would think a good go at them with a scrubbing brush and some disinfectant/antibacterial cleaner, and a good rinse should do the job. Give em a good while to dry out though in case of smells/fumes for the cleaning stuff

Cool idea now you mention it, must be cheaper to go and get a couple of slates from the builders yard, or even ask them for the broken bits etc than buy from garden centres etc.

Note to self, must investigate further .

Just be careful they are stable when you stick them in the viv, ie, don't wobble or slide about... Tis a good idea though!

Get a nice flat area, lay a sheet of plastic out on it nice and flat, apply aquarium sealant to the base of the tile, and press down firmly on the sheet of plastic. Allow the sealant to go off, then trim plastic to fit.

You could also make a complete floor like this and stick all the tiles down, though may be better done as two halves or in quarters so you can take them out easily for cleaning.

u could even grout them if necessary to fill in gaps, much the same as floor tiles. its jst we had quite a few kickin about. put them to some use! lol

apparently the go for less than £1 each. which is pretty good. especially if u go for brand new slates
