Someone told me that if you build a vivarium you need to varnish it, im using conti board. is this true, my dad said that the varnish would just flake off. thanks

You dont need to Varnish conti board hun

But I would seal it with silcone

As long as you put edging strip on all exposed surfaces you wont need to varnish the viv as it will just flake off as pixie said though you wll need to silicone seal all the joints.

Aquarium silicon is the safest for the sealing Just thought I'd add that in case, not wanting to cast aspertions about anyones intilect or anything, I had to ask myself not so long back

My biggest tip would be that when you are building the viv apply the sealent before you assemble a joint.This way you have a perfectly sealed viv and the water should not get into the wood
