Well you can use either a light, heatmat or a ceramic, the decision is all down to personal preference. I like to use lights for BOIDs (Boas & Pythons) and heatmats for corns etc.
There are severall types of thermostats available, i would use the following:
Light - Dimming or Temperature Thermostat, Dimming being the prefered as it does exactly what it says dims the bulb, making the bulb last alot longer and imo gives a more steady and accurate temperature. Where as the temperature thermostat turns the heat source off once the temperature it is set to is reached, making the bulb more likely to blow quicker and imo isn't as accurate.
Heatmat - Matstat or Temperature Thermostat, I have always used temperature thermostat so cannot comment on which is better, but i have found that the temp stat always works perfectly for mats.
Ceramics - Dimming or Pulse Thermostat, I would use a pulse thermostat though.
