Default natural habitat

heya, im getting some new vivs on thursday and after adding in the basics of what is needed i really want the decor to replicate the lizards natural enviroment, first one to be sorted is my lovely leopard geckos, as theres such confusion over substrate ive been looking into what they would naturally live on, its a kinda rocky clay like substance with some sand....anyway enough rambling, looking on the thread "how can i make one of these" i really like the way those hides have been made and wanna do the same thing but for the base of the viv, however im not sure about usisng the polystyrene blocks to shape it, would these melt coz of the heat mat, or would they just retain heat to much? any help or comments on this would be really helpful

The instructions for my heat mat said to put a piece of polystyrene over the back to keep all the warmth directed into the tank, so i presume it will not melt
