Default Savannah - Bosc Monitor Care

Just Found This Useful Site You Might Want To Check Out If Your A Bosc Owner...

Savannah Monitor Care Sheet and Information - WNYHS

One Part That Caught My Eye Was This...

Heat/Light: A warm basking spot should be provided for this monitor by radiant light. Racks of flood lamps work well for this, plan on 3 to 4 lamps at 60 to 120 watts each. Adjust the height above the basking spot to reach the ideal temperature. Supplemental heat can be supplied by large, robust heat mats such as "pig blankets." The savannah monitor should be able to rest its entire body on the mat. Ultraviolet light is not necessary.

The UV light aspect is heavily debatable. The way I saw it when I kept my Apollo was that they are a diurnal lizard, and therefore would recieve plenty of UV rays in the wild so I provided it in the viv. Not essential but beneficial IMO.

I personally wouldn't use heat mats with them and would provide basking spot of around 120F. I have read an article (and a good one) where the author's Bosc's were still basking up to 150f!!!

With my adults i personally didnt use UV, they had never had it all their lives and they were fine so didnt see a need, i would use it on juvies though as it cant do any harm. My basking spot using to be around 130

personally i think that any care sheet shouldent say NOT to use uv and must be carefull when using heatmatts unless properly set up. . . . besides there is a first class sticky at the begining of this "lizards classified chat" titeled "SO YOU WANT A SAV" which is well thought out and written. .

Even if people have raised Boscs without UV it could not hurt to provide it and would only have good affects if anything.
