Hi, I am in charge of feeding the crickets in this house......I have really got into it, and want to feed them the best way. What do you think about feeding them fish food? I give them bug gel as well. I find bug grub dries out too quickly. Wotchafink? Piles of smiles, Dobby.

I vary mine, but they seem to die quite quickly and they're remarkably thick, willingly drowning themselves in the shallowest of drinking bowls.
Mind have orange, lettuce, tropical fish flakes, sliced apple... all sorts really. I'm a veggie so there's always bits of fruit'n'veg knocking around. No hope breeding them yet though which is narking me off! ![]()

How about placing some sponge in the dish and keeping it damp ![]() |

A good way of making sure they don't drown is a method I read about in a 'Breeding Feeders' section of one of my books
Get a test tube (size doesn't has to be big but the smaller it is, the more often it needs re-filled) with a piece of sponge, cotton-wool or similar stuck in the end. This allows them to suck moisture from the sponge without ending up floating upside down in a dish of water lol We've not long started using this method in a cricket box and it seems to be working out ok? They get pieces of carrot scrapings (not too much tho), bits of apple ,etc...I've even fed them prawn crackers lol

Make sure they are not living in too moisture...something we've found out the hard way!
Most of my peelings go into the 'creatures food chain'-including any fruit my four year old doesn't finish. The best way I have found with few deaths to provide water is to cut an orange segment and chuck it in...they go nuts for it. Carrots are preferred by mealies i have found, but as someone said any dark greens go down a treat. If you quickly rinse them under the tap and shake off excess thats another way to give moisture and they don't drown!![]() I use bran, weetabix as substrate and add some calcium powder and a pinch of tropical fish flake. But make sure you remove any left over food next day or it stinks and they tend to die off. Better to feed a little each day IMO. HTH |
