i guess it depends on how much time he is likely to want to spend with the new pet- if he wants to handle and feed every day then a leo or something would be perfect, but if hes not gonna have time for all that (i know when you're a 9 year old u have lots of really important stuff to do after school like playing out lol!) then maybe a corn cos that will only need feeding once a week or so?
i guess its down to personal preference and how much time he will have to spare.

Hi Been looking at Corns already as easy to get on with, he spends time with the B/D as they laid today 20 eggs I rescued these bought them but near to death and have given them lots of T.L.C and food and had hoped they wasnt so keen to breed but they are all in great health 18 of the eggs look O.K. in incubator now fingers crossed.

I think Corns will be better than Gecko's as they lay more and are a little more hands on if wanted and easy to get on with.

KNZ our 9 year old has her own corns and they are breeding this yr, the only thing i will say is that corns stink no where near the same smell as a beardie though.
They also require a fair bit of space once they grow to adulthood especially if he is going to breed.
