Sorry guys but that is definately a black throat and not a white throat. I have kept both. White throats have a light coloured or light grey throat not dark. Also the pattern on the back is totally different.
The problem is that most retailers/dealers call them both names for the same animal, it is just a common name asigned to both when peple don't know what they are talking about. The animal in the pic looks typical of a black throat. Most black throats are imported from Tanzania. |

Its depends on how they look and locality. Banded white throat are probably the most expensive of the albigularis group. Also albigularis from South Africa may be a little more money simply because there is no export out of South Africa so this locality maybe sought after by collectors.

I agree with SeanUK 100%. That animal is definately a Black Throat (Varanus albigularis ionides) and although not a valid name anymore, this is the latin name used allot in the states.
Here is a pic of my male ![]() ![]() ![]() The three recognised species of albigularis are: V.albigularis albigularis (White throat monitor usually from south Africa). Not often seen in the pet trade but are the most attractive and lightly coloured albigs. Usually have a very light banded tail hence the name cape banded monitor. V.albigularis microstictus (True blackthroat monitor from east Africa.) Again not seen in captivity as often. They are often lighter tan/brown colours with very small and neat cream spots on there backs. Here are some pics of my female ![]() ![]() ![]() V.albigularis angolensis (Not sure on common name for these guys and have never seen one?? All i know is they come form Angola in south east Africa and no where else) Rick

yes true, im no Albig expert mainly going off literature (which is probably out of date lol) rick_albig has posted and i would trust him - i dont know the guy but he definitely does his research and is in contact with way more experienced keepers - the taxonomy as rick stated has been in disrepute and as such defining blackthroats as microstictus rather than ionidesi lots of research needed!!! pm'ed martin
