Default Leo food varieties? canned food?

Hi, my leo is still very young so I want him to be healthy, he no longer has crickets as he refuses to eat them so he has locusts everday and waxworms quiet often (I know their full of fat thats why im looking for alternatives Iv tried getting silkworms but was unsuccessful, I purchased calci grubs but he passed them undigested, & regardless of weather its true or not im not going to risk mealworms as they arent very nutritiouse and i dont want them chewing his belly.

So the only alternative i could think of for variety was canned food, I purchased jurassipet silkworms and jurassipet pillars, the silkworms dont look like worms so he wont eat them, (he will eat non moving worms but only worms he wont eat dead cricks or hoppers)

Anyways the pillars look gr8 but they are pillars of the shoot weevil beetle, so I dont know if I can feed them as iv never heard of these as feeds, although on the jurassipet website it says they are suitable for leos does anyone know if they are?

Also what are the zoomed pillars are they suitable

I would appreciate any help on these canned foods as I havent fed him any yet incase he gets ill from them.

Thanks

Heya

I've never heard of canned food for leos to be honest, you'd want something that's alive as you can then feed up the livefood to make your leo healthy and make sure they're getting all the nutrients etc, hoppers are fine for a staple diet, all my adults eat them without problem, the only reason I don't feed them to my juvies is because they're more expensive and juvies have to eat more often. Have you tried both varieties of crickets? Waxworms aren't a problem as long as you aren't using them as your staple, they are meant for treats type thing but to be honest, as long as you feed more hoppers than waxworms it's not a problem.

They can become addicted to the sweet taste of waxworms and they don't hold much nutritional value, so that is why people suggest as treats only, but as long as the other area of their diet is full of nutrition then there's no harm.

If your leo then goes off hoppers, you may want to stop the waxworms.

Thanx for the quick reply Im glad to hear locusts are ok as a staple because one particular supplier told me they were lacking in nutrition as you can only feed the cabbage/grass, is it ok for me to feed them other stuff like carrots, Iv tried it and they eat a bit but then I found a couple dead? so Im not sure i it was the carrots that caused it.

The locusts we buy only seem to eat greenery, tried loads of other things and they aren't interested. I know your not interested in mealies, but they are FANTASTIC gut loaders, they will eat anything you put in with them.

Canned food I doubt is very nutritional either.

well if i cut the mealies heads off will all their juices poor out? sick question i know but since my leos tiny still I pull the legs off the locusts but if they are damaged, eg the brown liquid coming out of them he wont eat them usually.

I really would give mealies a go, all of mine are fed on a "staple" diet of mealies and i have had no problem.
Also with juvies i last year i tried 4 on mealies and 4 on crix and found that the ones on mealies had an astonishing growing rate compared to crix. This is due to the ways in which you are able to gut load mealies!

As said though Crix or hoppers are fine as a staple diet!
I wouldnt use any dried or dead canned food at all.

EDIT: yes if you pulled their heads of they would goo!

I've had some sucess with making very thin pieced of carrot, using a potato peeler. It seems to me they do prefer leafy stuff and mainly don't eat large chunks much, but the thin pieces get eaten as well.
