I have had 2 leos that got impacted with there previous owner, 1 has died, the other I am treating right now. Calci sand is one of the worst for reptiles. Many breeders do get payed by producers to say that in the book. And also some may have just not experienced it. I have been working with them for 6-7 years now, and have seen many get it, and have helped many, it is a very difficult thing to correct, and that is if it doesnt get to far.

It is the owners option to use sand, but I think it is at your best interest to use no loose substrates.

As said before the calci sand needs to be removed.
The temps in the warm end need to be 88-90F and the cool end needs to be 82-84F
A night time drop of to the high 70s is fine.

What sort of heating are you using and do you have it on a thermostat?

Ive read in one book there shouldnt be any moist/humid areas in the cage, and in another you should spray the hide at the cool end with water every day, any ideas?
Im worried its getting to cold at night too. I work night shift and when I leave the house arround 8:00pm-ish the temp reads low 80's but when I get in about 7:00am-ish its down to arround 76/77.
as has been said the temp at the warm end needs to be 88*F-90*F, I also recommend the use of a moist hide to help with shedding (I have a rescue at home who's first owners didn't provide one ~ she lost most of her toes) and I would ditch the calci sand and use paper towel, lino or other non-particle substrate

I want to clear this up (but probably wont) because theres alot of conflicting views. Sand and compaction.
On one hand ive got a book written by breeders with 40 years experience, my shop with many years experience and I know they have a good reputation (Animal Allsorts, Newcastle), and a couple of other owners who say that using substrate is fine (calcium carbonate is supposed to be eadible for reptiles). On the other hand Ive got experienced owners and you yourself have a shop i believe (what I'm getting at its people with equal experience) telling me otherwise. Has someone here had impaction from substrate? (not personally obveously but please tell if you have had it personally, I used to mix sand into my yogourt when I was a todler, I'm OK I think...)
I thinks it already been said but is it worth risking it?? I know i did'nt when i bought my baby and was warned about impaction. I took her straight off the sand and went to the pound shop and bought self adesive floor tile lol then i placed kitchen towel on the top and she is more than happy with that! Its also alot to see her poo and keep it nice and clean x Don't take the chance as you would be heart broken if your gecko died x
