Default Common sense and advice....

I'm in one of those moods today where things annoy me (no surprise there then).. but today i'm going to use it usefully!

Just skimmed through a thread where somebody has asked for advice with setting up a viv and got answers such as:

take the heat mat out
put the probe in the cool end
Take the water bowl out
leave the water bowl in
you don't need a heat mat

(they are pretty much some of the replies)

Now.. ask yourself. If you were a newbie and asking for advice on something, how useful would those answers be?

a - told you everything you needed to know and you'll look after your new pet properly and he'll have a long and fruitful life
b - Sod Nobel, they'll be giving prizes out named after you soon because you're now an expert
c - what? what? eh? huh? what??? i think i might as well buy a pet rock as the advice given was as useful as a pork pie in a Mosque

Does it not make just the tiniest bit of sense to actually explain your 'advice'? Would you take you car to the garage and say 'it dunt work' and expect them to know what the problem is?

Apparently everybody on here is supposed to be giving advice for the best interest of their pets and reptiles in general. So if crap unexplained advice / answers is the in the best interest of animals then the RSPCA should be worshipped.

I thank you.

i do agree with you here. i think if you answering a long detailed question like this then you should give a long explantitory reason to your particular answer and make sure you cover as much as you can of what they have asked.

try using there questiong in oyur reply so they no what your answer is talking about??

Also agree, but as a newbie my self, i used the search tool! The same questions are asked over and over again and if more newbies used the search tool they will probs find the info they need, if they don't post a thread!!!

perhaps a sticky with the basic set up information all explained properly would be a good idea - one each for leos, beardies, cresties, iggys, etc

newbies could be referred to them and then ask questions from there

that's a fair point if you searh for the answers you want you will find loads of replys but then you don't need a forum you can just google things.

Me and a mate who doesn't post on here but reads it have been saying the same thing there is to many people who just stick up posts saying "do this" not "do this because....." an expanation would be much more help.

that and when people put up pictures saying "look how cute my pet is" with in the first 3 replys there will be someone saying "get if off sand now" they didn't ask for opinion on substrate they just wanted to show off their pet

Agree! It wouldn't be much of a forum if every newbie used the search tool but for every thing like things like temps for beardies, or substrates for leo's can all be found on the good care sheets!!!! And if newbies need that info more indepth or worryed about some thing said on a care sheet then post a thread!!! Its probs quicker to get the info off care sheets than to wait for people to reply(Even tho you guys are good at posting quickly with quality info)!!!

there is a whole forum section with care-sheets in.

people can't ever be arsed searching for anything, hence all the repeat threads with the same basic questions in...
