I have been usin beech chippings in with my bearded lizard hes only about 6 months old... The problem is he keeps eating the chippings when he grabs a cricket some i can pull out before he swallows it but some i cant.. Could anyone tell me if i could put sand in his tank or would somethin else be better??? cheers alan

If he is eating the substrate accidentally I would think that sand will be even worse because usually they can't spit it out because it's so small.

If he is having a problem with accuracy still and therefore getting the substrate instead of the cricket I would keep him on paper towel or newspaper until he is big enough to be accurately hitting the crickets and not the areas around it.

take the chips out and keep him n kitchen roll or newspaper till he is at least a year old.best to be safe than sorry.eating the chips could cause impaction and could rip his gullet. i use sand with my adult but only started that after he was over a year old.

You could also use reptile carpet or ceramic tiles. Lino can give off fumes when heated so that's not advised.

i have found that paper towels work best for young lizards, i dont really like using newspaper becuase its just weird thinking about the toixins in the ink and weither or not it might ingest the ink somehow, so i use paper towels, they come in a roll so its easy to put down and they are ''cleaner'' in a sort of way (and cheaper!)

Nah the ink is non-toxic. Kitchen towels and newspaper are good but need replacing too often for me to use. So I prefer carpet or tiles.
