Hi,
Just wondered if anyone could help me or if they had a leo in the same situation. A few weeks ago my leo gecko stopped eating completely. She's a year and a half old and always been happy and healthy and as she wasn't losing weight and the temperatures in the cage were fine I figured she would start again in a few days. After a couple of week as she still wsn't eating I took her to the vet, who is meant to be a reptile specialist. He says that she is egg bound (dystocia) and that my best options would be to mate her or (Aghhhh!!) have her ovaries removed. I don't want to have her operated on if I can help it so started to look for an adult male gecko. I contacted loads of gecko breeders in my area (Leeds) but when I explained the situation their advice was very different to the vets - such as if she is egg bound there may be a blockage thats preventing her laying so getting the eggs fertilised may make the situation worse not better. So I'm now even more confused and have no idea what to do!! I'm going to take her to another vet on saturday that a friend with a bearded dragon has used and get a second opinion. Sorry this has taken so long to explain and I hope it makes sense Thanks |

I have never heard that egg binding means you should mate the gecko... in fact, that sounds a bit odd to me!
The Gecko Spot, UK has a breeding caresheet and a health caresheet, and egg binding is mentioned on one or both of them. Sorry I can't be of more help, but well done for taking her to another vet. Good luck! ![]()

Hi
, I thought the advice was odd too, thats why i'm taking her to another vet on Monday morning. Hopefully he will have more idea of what he's taking about - it's worrying, the vet was classed as a reptile specialist and he doesn't seem to have any idea what he's taking about!! I'd already found the article - but thanks for all your help, I think I really needed a second opinion on whether or not to ignore the vet!! Cheers, you've helped put my mind at rest, have a good night x |

I'll keep you posted and keep a close eye on my leo over the weekend. At least i'm not at work so i'll have a better idea whats she's like during the day! I've been giving her a warm bath once a day and some 'critical care' mixture - it looks like calcium and vitimun powder and you mix it with water. This is also on the advice of the vet who doesn't have a clue....
Does that sound like a good idea? Sorry about all the questions - I love my leo to bits and I don't want to do anything stupidly wrong... Cheers x |
