A few explanations:
This document is an obligation for every sale, trade, buy or gift of CITES Annex II/EU Annex B animals. Examples: Day geckos, leaf-tail geckos, Royal Pythons, Burmese Pythons, Kenyan Sand Boas, Boa Constrictors... It is optional if those animals are not listed in the above annexes BUT think you would be glad to have it if one day CITES lists change and include more species. In that case, the date of the document will certify you legally bought an animal or a group of animals of the same species before they were included in the CITES annexes. In the case of CITES Annex I and/or EU Regulations Annex A animals, this document is NOT valid. You must ask your local wildlife authority for an "Intra-Communautarian Certificate" printed on a yellow form and which will include ID details enabling authorities to distinguish the concerned animals from others of the species: it could be through the number of an electronic chip which has to be implanted on such animals for every individuals as long as they are large enough for such implantations, or, in the case of very small animals (frogs, newts, geckos, inverts...) at least a precise photo included in that certificate. Examples of Annex I/A or II/A animals: BCO (Boa Constrictor Orientalis), Dumeril's boas, Komodo Dragons... The name and address of the buyer is optional but I included it for more clarity. This document must be taken with the concerned animal when: -travelling with that animal -in shows -crossing borders Customs and Wildlife authorities are enabled to control this document. You are, in case you lack this document, likely to have your animal seized by authorities as it would have no proven origin, and get a heavy fine to pay. Of course, the above paragraph DOES NOT apply to Non-CITES species (leopard geckos, CWD, cornsnakes, kingsnakes, milksnakes, tokays, bearded dragons...). It is just wiser to ask for one when you purchase, trade or receive as a gift one of such animals in case CITES decides to place such or such species in Annex II in the future. What about CITES number? A CITES number for animals imported to UK shall include the country of destination, year of importation, area of importation through a numeric code, and a number of shipment. Ex: UK-09-001-25645 would look like a valid number. In case of Annex I/A and II/A, this number is particular to every imported specimen. In case of Annex II/B (most of the CITES species present in the hobby), this number does NOT correspond to a particular animal but to a shipment of individuals of the same species from one destination in the world to another. For example, if a shop in London or Bristol imports 150 royal pythons from Ghana, they will all have the same CITES number. I don't know how strict the Wildlife authorities are in the UK but I hope that will help some of you. I would advise to print some copies of it when you travel to foreign shows like Hamm to use when you buy and sell animals. For example, if you sell animals to French, Spanish or Italian people, even for non-CITES species, many of them will ask you such a document.
