Noticed this morning that my female geckos where both up and saw one of them walking at there cave waving her tail high in the air. It was then I noticed the other one at the opposite end of the viv with her tail waving up high as well. Can anyone tell me what this behaviour is? I hope its not aggresion

Leopard geckos vibrate there tails for aggresive behaviour...
It is when a male vibrates his tail that the female will wave here tail from side to side to show she is not aggresive and will allow him to mate... It may have just been a realy exaggerated walk as mine often use there tail while walking and on 2 of them it is much more prominent then the others. But i have never seen mine holding them high in the air

Suprisingly, there are few facts known about tail waiving.
Most info there is, is from other keepers who have observed this action Generally, I belive the following, but its only my observations, not hard and firm fact. Tail waiving in the air, slow and deliberate seems to indicate some kind of dominance and/or warning, kind of like, 'hey, I am here, dont mess with me' Its often in combination with standing up high on all legs, making themselves look bigger. Tail waiving side to side, quite slowly seems to indicate a feeling of stress or worry, it as if they are trying to trick you into thinking that they are either bigger than they are, or a different animal. May also be linked with the dropping of the tail, so could be like saying 'Hey, if you gona eat me, eat this nice fat worm first'. of course if that happend, the tail is dropped and leo runs away. Tail waiving side to side, but faster, is often seen when they are hunting down prey. I dont know the reason for this, maybe some kind of kenitic energy build up to enable the final lunge at the prey, or maybe an even harder attempt to distract any thing hunting them, whilst thier attention is distracted. Tail waving very fast, and only the tip , so fast it makes a buzzing sound is a kind of mating call. As to yours, they may be having an off day, how long have you had them together? |

jarrasic seems spot on. My female waves her tail at other females and she puts her front legs foward and makes her self taller and bigger with her tail. this is saying basicly - get lost or else.. maybe your females dont get long?
my other leos sometimes wave their tails when hunting but i think this is due to excitement of the hunt rather then any hunt technique. and if its a male, youll know cos its so loud and vibrating sound. think its just how they communicate, they dont really call much (some do) a moveable tail is the best sign of their emmotion. |

Haha! One of my babies really dislikes me and along with hissing and biting, she/he also hits me with her tail!! And my adults all wave their tails slowly when they wander around and they all get on fine
