Use your noggin... check for the accreditation. Online courses are fine but not it they have no recognised qualification.

It defeats the purpose trying to further your education if you are not intelligent enough to check the course has a genuine RECOGNISED accreditation at the end of it.

Before you think about doing this course it would be worthwhile looking at what is available on a part time basis at uni. There are more and more courses now which offer flexible learning. For example I am doing a law degree over 4 years at Nottingham trent university which does not interfere with work at all.

I have done an Advanced animal behaviour diploma and Primatolgy course online. They were pricey and did not help me to try to get into animal work. I did the primate one with Compass and one assignment (that took me hours) came back with a coffee ring on the front on it. Thats how much the tutor valued the work

Incase anyone is still confused or wondering, the course linked in this topic is completely and utterly useless.

The website deliberately avoids making mention of the issuing or accrediting institution or authority, perhaps because there isn't one.

The links to various seemingly good names are spurious or tenuous at best.
ZSL is the only relevant institution mentioned and a quick glance over the recognitions page makes it clear that ZSL are nothing to do with the course and they are simply ok to recognise the supposed qualification in volunteer applications.

No one will give you a job based on this, it will not be worth the paper that it's been printed on.

~This is absolutely brilliant. Unfortunately this will happen to you everywhere. Well at least it does to me, at each of the 4 universities i've studied/ worked at, infact I have probably been guilty of it more than once! It is not a reflection on how much the tutor values your work, its not even a sign of how many esays they had to mark. Its just chance with some clumsyness thrown into the mix.

Oh, and I would avoid this course, the module descriptions make the course sound very basic, perhaps this is what you want, but it seems a lot of money...
If you want to write some essays, that are criticlly marked, I'll set some for you. I suspect it'll be just as useful, and I'm a relatively firm marker.

I emailed these and basically asked a few question, if you read around the website, it is accredited for many things- zsl, ukrlp, iaabc etc
So here is the email and the response i got........

2009/11/5 Zak Ward
Dear Sir, Madam

I have seen that you do online courses/diploma's, I have a ciple of questions if you dont mind answering?

Basically all i want to no is the WHOLE course, a home learning course?

Is there any traveling involved for the course?

Is there a time limit on how fast or slow each modual has to be done, or is there a deadline that is set for each modual?

When course is complete, if a pass, will I be recognized as a qualified Herpetoligist?

Thank you for your time

Dear Zak

Thanks for your message. Yes, the entire course is a home learning course that can be done in your own time, at your own pace and from home; there is no travelling involved. There is no time limit for each module, they can all be done entirely in your own time. Successful completion of the course results in the Herpetology Diploma qualification.

Kind regards

Kim
