Default Problem. Possible 2 Males In The Tank

Hi All.

Around 1.5 months ago i made a post about a friend having a gecko and was unsure of its sex. He could not keep it and asked me to take him on. I already had one gecko that was a little bit bigger, but i took on the little fella and kept him seperate until he got to a similar size (which took a few weeks).

My bigger gecko was checked by a rep owner close to where i live and he said it was definatly a female.

Now i was checking them over yesterday and the older one looks 99% like a male, he has 2 large balls under his anus between his tale. The younger one is slightly smaller, not major, but i cannot tell wether or not its male or female.

They have both been living together for around 3.5 weeks and they are doing fine. They never fight, they lie together sometimes and go hunting together. Both are eating well, sheding well and pooping normal.

The bigger one likes to lye with his head out of the hide and his body inside it, there are plenty of hides, but they both lye in the same one usually. When they pass each other they just sniff and lick each other.

Im unsure on what to do now, just incase the other one is a male, but wouldn't they both have fought? They are both around 3 months old.

I cant take photos because my camera is broke im afraid

ps. I read somewhere that shaking their tales is a sign. They have never done i to each other but when they hunt for crickets they shake there tails at the crickets. Do both males and females shake thier tales when hunting?

Hi
Yes both male and female leos shake their tail when hunting. They also do this a mating thing and they also do this to divert preditors attention away from their heads.
The only way to tell really is to take pics and post them up here
just in case id seperate until you can be 100% sure of the sex

This is how the male should look from the bottom

No camera im afraid. And the tank i had to keep the little one in has gone back to my friend so i havn't even got a spare tank.

The otherone is showing no signs of being male, was just worried.

Just looking at them now, i love the way they lye, they look so cute with there feet behind them and there chin on the ground.

Also on those images, the female looks as she has tiny bulges where the male has his "balls".

I will have to try get hold of a camera of a mate and post something up.

Yes the females tend to have A lump and the males have "balls"

not 100% from that pic but it looks like a male to me

Anyone else?

on a different note if they are male and female you will need to seperate them otherwise they are going to breed as soon as they become mature (which is earlier for males than females)
Or you will have a very young gravid leo on your hands which can lead to her becoming egg bound

Unfortunatly due to the christmas period plus being a student money is tight.

I was due to build a wooden viv next month but it will have to wait until my second paycheck in January. They should be ok until then, once i got the wooden viv built, which shouldn't take long, i can seperate them.

you could get a large faunarium which is only like 10 quid or something and you could have that as a temp backup. Thats what I use!

But then would also need and extra heat mat, stat, hide, water, calcium.

But i do agree how big is their viv at the moment?
If its big enough you could put a faunarium in the viv
Exo Terra Faunarium Plastic Terrariums - Ideal for Inverts
Theres some not expensive either and as far as im aware you can have 2 heat mats on one stat as the geckos will be kept at the same temps

Id say thats a male personally My other half was right ( well done hunni ) yes its not expensive to get another setup. You can connect two heatmats to one stat i do it myself which my other half doesnt know about lol Anyway if you suspect two males SPLIT THEM up until you can be 100% sure what would you rather have two happy leos or two dead leos. Fair enough they won't have sexually matured yet but thats not the case its when they do sexually mature you will get problems.
