Default Anyone reccomend good bearded dragon started kit?

I don't want something cheap and horrible, neither do I want something that they're going to grow out of within a couple of months. I am only planning on having 1. Planning to spend £200 maximum on a full set up.

Any comments, advice, links much appreciated.

Thanks

hey, to be honest you will be lucky if your going to find a set up like that, at £200, moe likely £300 -£400.

you be better off either looking on the classifieds where you would be likely to pick up a bargain or build a viv yourself and buy everything you need.

wood - £20 (cost me £15 or a 8ft x 4ft bit)
nails, sealant, vents, mesh - i would budget £30
Uvb and starter - £40
Bulb and fitting - £8
water and food bowl - £8
Decor - free get it outside
bearded dragon £20-50

so if you done it yourslef you'd be looking at between

£120 - £160

if you look on Ebay you'll get all you need for the right price.

you need:
4x2x2 viv (ideally)
10.0 UV tube with a starter that has the correct wattage (the tube will tell you what wattage you need)
Spot bulb and fitting.. doesn't have to be a reptile one! they charge extra for sticking a picture of a lizard on the box.
Thermostat - very important! has to be a dimming thermostat

decor.. as much or as little as you want to spend.

Dan's £8 for water and food bowls is a bit high.. you can use any bowls really and not all beardies will drink from a water bowl.. if you do put one in just use a small one so you don't raise humidity too much.

digital thermometers, 2 of, one for the hot end and one for the cool end.

yeh £8 may be a bit high, i was just looking at the maximum you are looking to pay.

i got everything i needed for about £100 including beardie. and thats a 48"x24"x18" ( i find it easier to achieve the basking temp with only 18" height) viv with ubv and starter, bulb and fitting, water and food bowl. with decor from outside.

I was hoping on getting a youngish beardie, as I would want to watch it grow (well, not quite literally, over the months) etc, but people say baby ones are so fragile. Is it true baby ones would not feed in a viv the right size for them when they grow into an adult so I would have to stay in a smaller one for a few months or so?

well people dont sell beardies till at least 6-8 weeks anyway, so i wouldnt say they were to young and mine was certainly not fragile at this age.

i also disagree about the viv size, alot of people put their baby beardies straight into 4x2x2 and get on fine, i personally did this and he has been feeding since day 1.

if you were worried about the size issue though, you could just partition the viv, so its smaller, and then increase the size as he gets bigger.

Dan

p.s a lot of beardies wont eat when you first get them anyway as they need time to settle in, so dont be worried if yours does then when you get it.

i got all mine for about £140 - £160 i found it quite a bit cheaper to buy the viv and everything else needed seperatly than buying a starter kit. and like said above its probably better to get the size viv you want to keep it in for ever and put a partition in rather than having to upgrade when they grow out of a smaller one.

Try this

NEW* 4ft Vivarium Full Bearded Dragon Set-Up / Home * on eBay, also, Reptiles, Pet Supplies, Home Garden (end time 01-May-08 20:30:00 BST)

Bought one the other week, it came super quick and with delivery and everthing it was £196!

All you need is a stat and yr ready to go. The only thing that put me off was the beech chips, I wouldn't use them for a beardie but they could come in useful for something else. They have it available with 3 ft vivs too.

£200 should get you a setup easy!

We sell 4 x 2 x 2 with heat mat, thermostat, light fitting, basking light, hide, water bowl, thermometer, humidity dial, substrate, starter unit and 10% UVB for £200.. and that's a big tank, if you wanted a 48 x 18 x 18 it would only be £180. Obviously you can add extras but that's a nice tank for life and you have plenty of time to add more as he grows.
