Default vivarium size.

I folks, got plenty of questions to ask, looking at getting a bearded dragon. What vivarium size would be ample to house one of theses critters? Only the other half dont want a basic vivarium.... Looks like i am going to have a custom one built as she wants the viv in the alcove part of the furniture. Alcove is 3ft x 3ft want a corner viv with cabinet underneath anyone know who builds them and would it be adequote in size? many thanks all..

4' x 2' is the generally-accepted minimum. That gives them 8 sq. ft. of floor space, so a 3' x 3' (giving 9 sq. ft.) would be perfect. I'd advise you to keep it to 18" tall though, otherwise fitting lights for UV and heating becomes a bit of a nightmare, as you are into the realms of having to hang them etc...

Hi all having made a few enquires today was told a corner vivarium of the size 3ft x 3ft would not be suitable for a bearded dragon.. My other option is now to have a vivarium in front of the bay window the only thing is as you know bay windows curve round a bit like a fifty pence piece... So vivarium at the back would need to be 4ft then the sides need to be angled 2ft to the shape of the contour of the bay, front of the vivarium 6ft in length...Any persons on the forum local to me (I'm in Nottingham or any companies or any other suggestions to where i could have this built...I am not practical so it's a no no for me having a go at it many thanks......

Thanks for your input LadySofia i am totally green at this so i want the correct living conditions for the reptile. Was Nottingham reptiles i spoke to this morning putting the measurements to them they said 3ftx 3ft would not be sufficient for a Bearded Dragon having lost a majority of the floor space due to the fact the vivarium is a corner viv. He then said a adult Bearded can grow to a size of 22inches, which i then thought well yes the time you have put all your accessoires in there is not a great deal of space. I appreciate all feedback.....

sounds like your doing loads of research which is great.

adult male BD can grow to 24", a good 8-10" of that is the tail. My boyfriends BD is in a 4ft x 2 ft vivarium and is the laziest thing ever, doesnt use half the space, just climbs on a branch and stays there all day

hope you end up with something both you and you BD enjoy, let me know how it goes

If it's a corner viv that will have an angled front then it wouldn't be suitable - as you quite rightly said, you'd lose a lot of the floor space. A 3' x 3' square as the floor area would be fine though - it depends how you were planning to do it.

Most adult beardies get to around 18-19"; they can occasionally get a bit larger than this, but it's fairly rare for one to get much above 20"...

Sorry didn't quite explain it to clear, the viv would taper into the corner therefore only having floor space, at the widest point of the viv which obviously would be at the front the widest point....It wouldn't be 3'x3' square.
