Hi.
The bulbs you linked to on mapins site are, from what i have seen [happened to buy a red and looked at a green in a maplin shop] they are normal colourless white bulbs just as thier normal coloured bulbs of the same size and wattage are, but with the bottom round part of the bulb painted in a collour. Some people notice they give off some fumes atleast for a while, which isnt good but if it stops over time they could be used once burned in. However the red version, isnt for instance the same as a bulb sold as "infa red" where the glass itself is a much darker colur and its the whole bulb. Even those arent actually technically infa red, or else we wouldnt see the red light, and im not sure about snakes but many lizards can actually see the light given off by them atleast to an extent, but they do seem to do quite well for nocturnal ligthing. Or diurnal for nocturnal species or whatever you want to use them for as "invisible" or low level ligting. Cermaic heaters would perhaps be better infact if you want a heat without producing any light that you or the snakes can see? [erm.. snakes see heat but thats not the sort of see im talking about, in regards to "light"..agh i know what i mean lol.] You can get infa red bulbs other than the ones specifically packaged for use with reptiles like the ones you saw on ebay [prolly, like the exo terra bulbs] in garden centres ,or lighting or diy stores or wherever you would find any light bulb but they arent always easy to find ,they would also be marketed as "infa red" usually i think. May work out cheaper if you can find any.
