Default What type of wood should I use

Hi,

I am about to build a rather large viv for either a boa or a python ( not decided which one yet ) I have kept both these before but never built my own viv. What i need to know is simply are there any types of wood I need to avoid for toxicity reasons and once i have built the viv what is the best way to paint or stain the viv internally and again what should i avoid. Hope someone out there can help.

Many thanks
Swifty

I've built several large vivs (for lizards) using MDF. They were sealed using an acrylic sealant, less fumes than pure silicone and it can be painted over. then emulsioned and varnished with a water based floor varnish.
The varnish is tough stuff, with no problems caused by heat, humidity or UV

theres pics of some of them here:

That's really helpful as I had the same question, lol, as I am going to build a viv for my GCSE tech project. Good luck with building your vivs.

I think contiboard aswell as MDF are the favorite's when buiding vivs. You can get contiboard cheap as chips from most DIY stores aswell!
