Take it to the vet, depending on the course they decide they will advise you on exactly how to do it.

VERY complex issue.

parasites come in MANY different types. different medicines treat different parasites.

simple answer is take some fresh poo to your vet and aske them for a full fecal screen. they will have to determine the type of parasite before prescribing the right treatment.

some wormers are administreed at near toxic levels to be effective, so NOT something to experiment with. shouldnt cost much to get a fecal check done.

My califorian king has just returned after 11 months on the rampage under the floorboards @ my Mumz house. Should I worm her? Or like the lady said take a fecal sample 2 the vet? How would I know if she had paracites? chrz

feel free to worm your snake if thats what you want to do. but how do you know that it has worms? worms can cover a whole multitude of parasites. you need a different treatment for each type. it could have nematodes, cestodes, trematodes, anything. if it didnt have worms before it went on its little journey, why would it have worms now? do you have mice or rats in the floor boards?? it could only have caught worms (if it didnt have them before!) by eating them in livefood/whole prey items.

a fecal check every year will be for the best anyway, as rats can have parsites, as can mice. so its kind of inevitable that some snakes will pick up a parasitic burden.

Sorry, it looks like it wasn't a simple question after all!

I've just read in a few threads after people "worming" their snake. I understood this to be some sort of action to either prevent their snake from getting worms or from curing an infection was just wondering how they went about this?

Have I got the wrong end of this one? I'm thinking worming may mean taking a stool sample to the vet now!

Thanks, again, guys.

you can not prevent an animal from getting worms, unless you screen every single food item for parasites. unfortunately, parasite in reptiles is like nits in kids! they all have them occasionally, in one way or another. keepers view parasites (internal and external) as a muisance that is easily dealt with. the key to keeping your animal healthy is to deal with it asap. and the best way to dealw ith internal parasites is to get a poo sample to the vets, keep it in a sample pot with a little damp cotton wool. ask them for a fecal screening and tell them what animal its from. the vet may do it themselves or may send it away. only when you know what type of parasites you are treaing, can you get the right medication.

and treating an animal " just as a precaution" is often a dangerous thing to do. most drugs wipe out the gut bacteria, so your animal is unable to digest food for a few weeks. this affects appetite, increases lethargy etc. you would ned to administer over ten types of drugs to remove every possible parasite burden, there is NO one stop cure. and alot of these drugs are toxic, and can only be given to VERY healthy animals. if an animal has renal problems, alot of vets will advise you PTS as the correct medication will kill the animal.

as i said, very complex and difficult issue!
