yeah shes right, horsefields and yemens are the best beginners, horsefields are more hardy too, no you dont, if you ask, im sure people will post pics of their tortoise tables, you can easily make one too for a matter of pounds for the wood...

Hi Stace, If you're thinking of buying a horsfield your best option is a tortoise table. This can be something as simple as an underbed box if you don't want the expense of a wooden table, or if you need something more secure (say if you have dogs or cats) then an indoor rabbit cage would be suitable too.

The best substrate for a horsfield is a 70/30 mix of topsoil and sand (70% topsoil and 30% playsand). Horsfields like to burrow and dig so you'll need this of a good enough depth to let them... obviously the depth depends on the size/age of the tort. You'll also need a uvb (10%) and a basking light (or a combined mercury vapour bulb which will act as a uvb and basking in one), a piece of slate to feed on (keeps their beak down and stops them ingesting the substrate) and a water bowl which is large enough for it to bathe in (but shallow).

Bear in mind that a Horsfield will need to hibernate through winter and that you will need a secure (remember horsfields dig!) outdoor enclosure for it as it will be able to go outside from around May to September.

There's a sticky at the top of this section on Med Tortoises which has links to lots of good articles on housing, feeding and selecting. Have a look through those then come back with specific questions.
