Default first reptile

hi, i recently enquired about housing turtles but since i cant give them the necessary requirements i would like a lizard instead. the viv i am looking at is the glass exo terra 45x60x45. i would love a bearded dragon/monitor but due to adult size this is out of the question. are there any other small lizards/dragons which are quite hardy for a beginner and which can be accomodated in the above viv at adult size? i've read about pygmy chameleons and they look quite cool but im not sure about availability nor pricing. i'm not overly keen on geckos as the thought of the tail coming off in my hand puts me off lol. any help/advice greatly appreciated, trevor

IMO the glass exo terras are awful for keeping anything that eats crickets - i had one for my frogs and the amount of crickets that escaped was beyond belief.

The 'closeable handy cable exits' are no way secure enough to keep crix in, and the 'handy cable channels' in the 3d background makes anideal hiding place for them

leapord geckos can be kept in a reasonably small viv (2x1x2?). they are similar to bearded dragons although do not grow as large and most like to be handled.

I've sealed off the back panel problem on mine and the cable slide has never been a problem for me.

The back just required a litte mod and now it's great. I love using them.

leopard geckos have the detachable tails but it's actually hard to make them drop. Unless you handle them by the tail or something falls on them and they're trapped and lose the tail to get it's not going to just fall off because you open the lid and give them a shock. They store fat and nutrients in the tail so they won't let go of that just for any old reason.

They love to be handled and as long as you do this properly (place your hand flat in front of them then gently touch the back of the leg and they should walk onto your hand) then there's no reason to suspect the tail coming off.

Leopard geckos are one of the "starter" lizards as their keep is reasonably easier. They're cheaper to start up and keep too than bearded dragons but the choice is ultimately yours.

Sorry if that sounded like a snappy reply lol. It's just I'd rather you made an informed decision about which lizard to pursue.

If you have any questions about leopard gecko care then don't hesitate to ask.

For that viv would say get yourself a crestie, great starter lizard, the tail is very unlikely to come off unless you grab it by the tail, and even then its unlikely.

I wouldnt advise a leo in that viv, if you wanted a leo then you will need a length of 2ft and preferably a wooden viv.

I will vote crestie all the way, need no extra heating etc, just spraying with water once a day, they are great for handling, can be a little quick, but they soon settle down.
