Default Tortoise Help!

Hello everyone

I am going to buy a tortoise this weekend and really need some help on what to buy in relation to the tortoise itself but also the equipment I need to have to make sure it is kept in the perfect conditions...

I live in Hampshire and am going to buy one from porton pet and aquatic centre who I believe are very reputable?

Any advice is greatfully received...

Lovely forum and FAB smilies..

I have my own forum for Cat breeders, owners and exhibitors and we love our smilies too!

LOTS! you must be aware that mediteranean species are smaller than african species. go to shelled section and look at the stickys there. lots and lots of info about choosing a healthy tortoise. make sure you ask where the tortoises have come from, alot of them are imported from europe, from tortoise farms. the conditions are less than perfect and if you buy a euro-tort you will need to see a vet straight away to get him fully wormed and checked up. this is not such a worry with ukcb animals.

you should get :

an indoor enclosure (plastic underbed box, about £7)
a basking lamp ( flexible desk lamp with a 60w bulb in, about £7)
a uvb tube and starter ( about £25 for both together)

you will need something for the floor, most people use soil and sand mixed up together. a hide or two. and a plant pot saucer for water, and a rough slate or tileforfeeding. and of course a thermometer to get your temps right.

get all of that set up BEFORE you get you tortoise, and the transition will be much easier.

oh, and you should post in shelled section straight away, most tortoise people dont wander away from shelled!

As anticipated, I was told to get a vivarium and pellet bedding

I did laugh when he suggested it..

Will upload pics into photobucket and post if thats allowed?
