i have 10mm tunnels, and my boyfriend did have 12mm. he took his out a few months ago and the hole is now like a 5mm size but doesnt seem to be getin any smaller.
i also have a mate of mine and she has 8mm took her out and the hole just stayed. suppose it depends on how long you keep them for. warning tho, your ears with STINK when you have done them, its just a totally horrible smell  and i went from a 4mm to a 10mm in 1 go, and by god i thought i was dyein of pain!

I love stretching, have mine at 6mm atm due to work restrictions, love my plugs so much I have my own store (import loads of different styles for when I get bored)... www.fleshplug.co.uk take a look if you're still hunting fleshplugs out, all plugs, tunnels and tapers are factory new.
The smell with stretches can be bad, to minimise it, try and stick to organic plugs and tunnels, like stone, wood and horn. It allows the earhole to breathe. Acrylics and steels can make them sweat and stink, steel is best for new stretches...... hope this is helpful somehow!
